The cargo pod is a bolt-on hold: a container mounted on a ship's hull, built in an Assembler. It adds cargo room, and the extra bulk lowers the ship's speed.
It is a small fitting, so it fits any slot. It is fitted and removed at a station with a shipyard in the ship's system, and comes out intact.
